Unidentified Person: Where do you pray?
Scenario
After being released from prison, mob capo Dwight “The General” Manfredi is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he builds a new criminal empire with a group of unusual characters. Sylvester Stallone’s first leading role in a television series. Dwight “The General” Manfredi: I don’t really go to church… The opening credits sequence shows various photographic and painted views, as well as Oklahoma landmarks set against the New York landscape: A statue of a Sioux Indian chief wearing a war jacket with a hat and a bone necklace placed on top of the Brooklyn Bridge.

Golden Drill statue placed on the Statue of Liberty main avenue of Manhattan. In the New York borough of Manhattan, there are several numbered “Avenues” that are intersected by smaller numbered streets. I thought it would be a fun show. We’re used to thinking that anything with Stallone would be a comedy these days, and Tulsa King actually has a lot of humor.
The characters are really likeable in all aspects
But Taylor Sheridan isn’t going to create a simple parody of mob history and use Stallone as a joke and punch line. The series has promising depth, despite the light premise of a cash-strapped ex-gangster forced to start over in a new city after a long prison sentence. Comedy ensues when a New York gangster finds himself in Tulsa to establish his territory using his “old fashioned” methods. While it’s not uncommon to root for a “bad” guy as a protagonist, his directness and old-fashioned common-sense values appeal to those of us looking for something refreshing amid today’s social crap.
Stallone gives an excellent performance
The irony in this message is that it takes a bully who bows to no one to break through and expose the shallow social hypocrisy. It’s the same formula that made Yellowstone so successful, and Sheridan knows it’s what many of us want. Before he became a caricature of his later roles that led to the demise of the Rocky and Rambo franchises, his acting and screen presence created these iconic roles. It’s nice to see him back on screen in a role that seems perfect for him, and to use some of that sassy personality to add depth to his character and the series, instead of undermining them.
All in all, a very entertaining series that I’m looking forward to and a great addition to the Paramount+ portfolio
