This is Carlos

Scenario

When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. Diehz’s first major film appearance, having previously appeared only in two short student films. He was an architect by profession until 2020, when his youngest son left home and decided to pursue a new hobby, taking online acting courses and auditioning. Cardinal Benitez delivers his climactic speech in Spanish. It’s a bit of a stretch to think that all the other cardinals can easily understand him. This is a false assumption. By default, all the cardinals are fluent in Latin, and many others in the film speak Italian during their conversations.

Quoted in The Saad Truth: My Review of Conclave (Film) – Wokeism Destroys Everything (2024)

All of these languages belong to the Romance language family, so it’s not a stretch to assume that most of the cardinals have a basic understanding of Spanish. Sister Agnes: Even though we sisters think we are invisible, God has nevertheless given us eyes and ears. Allegri: Miserere Performed by Capella Musicale Pontificia Sistina, Massimo Palombella Courtesy of Deutsche Grammophon GMBH Under Universal Music Operations Ltd. license. Lies. A hoax. Manipulation.

A chess game on a global scale

Strategy. Every move is calculated, every alliance is carefully researched. A challenging and thrilling contest of strategy and influence. Edward Berger takes an intimate and sacred process like a conclave and transforms it into something thrilling that echoes the cunning and intrigue of Game of Thrones and Inheritance, while also feeling surprisingly relevant. Conclave is a carefully constructed thriller behind closed doors, where religion and politics collide and petty souls are tested for a chance at ultimate power. Conclave is a movie about choosing the least questionable candidate to set back decades of progress. Hmm…

It’s such a well-directed “men in bedrooms” movie

sounds familiar. I don’t want to get too political, but there’s a reason this movie came out when it did, and the complex messages it conveys couldn’t be more relevant to the current political climate, not just in the US, but in many parts of the world. I’m seeing a lot of delightfully witty reviews on Letterboxd/social media saying it’s a funny movie about priestly gossip (“What if Gossip Girl only took place in the Vatican????”), and that’s not true, but it also fails to mention that it’s a very serious and deeply moving look at the tensions of faith, the desperate search for certainty, and the true purpose of the church. A drama that feels like it could have been made in the 1940s or 90s. Imagine an Aaron Sorkin (The Social Network, Moneyball, A Few Good Men) movie set in the Catholic Church. That’s Conclave. The ensemble is exceptional, with Ralph Fiennes delivering a performance that is as subtle as it is powerful.

Conclave completely ignores this

The tense atmosphere is reinforced by a pulsating score and immersive sound design, though an occasional moment of exaggerated levity breaks the tension and adds an unexpected layer of entertainment to this spectacular collection. It is one of the most riveting and impeccably crafted films of the year, a masterclass in classic Hollywood cinema, brilliantly directed by Edward Berger, who most recently helmed All Quiet on the Western Front. There is this “rule” when editing a film: don’t show doors closing; just cut away. It should be a reminder to avoid unnecessary or mundane sequences. Characters stop and move between lines, their sneakers squeaking on the Italian marble.
