Scenario
Follows a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts who exploit their town’s sudden interest in the occult to gain a reputation as a Satanic metal band until a strange series of events sparks a witch hunt that leads back to them. All of the episode titles are from songs by heavy metal/hard rock bands. Hysteria by Def Lepard, Heaven’s on fire by KISS, Speaking in tongues by Meatloaf, Can I play with madness by Iron Maiden, Die young by Black Sabbath, Mother Danzig, It’s late Queen, and Dance Macabre by Ghost.
The parents are what you would expect from an 80s TV show
Peacock isn’t my usual streamer, but I got a good price for it. Either way, I wasn’t expecting much, but I like a good horror comedy, and this was better than I expected. I like that it is set in the 80s because it gave it a “leave it to the beavers” vibe.
The other story is adults going into a frothy religious hysteria (get it) over their children
When a teenage football star disappears and is later found in what looks like a ritual death, two stories start to run parallel. Three outcasts who have a hard rock band that nobody goes to decide to use it as a way to get publicity for their band. They convince everyone they are Satanists, which works for a while, but then they become prime suspects for murder.
The two main characters are Linda and Tracey
Tracey is a good villain, because she is fully willing to use Linda’s fear of her son and his choices not being understood as a way to whip the town into hysteria. The show is not perfect, but it does say some interesting things about how parents fear not understanding their children when they don’t follow through on their plan. But it also shows that there is real danger hidden beneath the fear and paranoia.
It’s a fun show and if you’re looking for something worth watching, it’s worth checking out
